The full walkthrough below covers the security check, the app steps, and why the Remove link sometimes won't appear.

How to change your email on LinkedIn from a computer

LinkedIn doesn't let you overwrite your email in place. You add a second address, promote it, and only then retire the first. That order is what keeps you from being locked out halfway.

Add the new address

  1. Click the Me icon, then select Settings & Privacy.
  2. Click Sign in & security in the left pane.
  3. Click Email addresses under Account access.
  4. Click Add email address and complete any security check LinkedIn shows.
  5. Enter the new address and your LinkedIn password, then click Submit.

Confirm it and switch over

  1. Open the email LinkedIn sends to the new address and follow the prompts in it.
  2. Click Make primary next to the new address back in Email addresses.
  3. Click Remove next to the old address, if you want it gone.

LinkedIn's page on managing your email address describes the same sequence.

What to have ready before you change your LinkedIn email

The change takes a few minutes when everything is to hand, and much longer when one piece is missing. Before you start, line up three things:

  • Your LinkedIn password, because LinkedIn asks for it when you submit the new address.
  • The new inbox, open in another tab, so you can confirm the address straight away.
  • The LinkedIn app, signed in on your phone, in case LinkedIn asks you to approve the change there.

If you've forgotten your password, sort that out first. Starting an email change you can't finish leaves the account halfway between two addresses.

How to change your email in the LinkedIn app

The app follows the same logic with slightly different taps. Tap your profile photo, then Settings & Privacy, Sign in & security and Email addresses.

Tap Add email address, enter the new one, and confirm it from your inbox. Then tap Make primary, which sits below the address, and remove the old one.

In a mobile browser, it's your profile photo, then Settings, Sign in & security and Email addresses. From there the steps match.

Why LinkedIn asks for a code or app approval first

Before it accepts a new address, LinkedIn may run a security check. You might be asked for a verification code sent to your current primary email, or to approve the change through your LinkedIn app.

That's there to stop someone who got into your session from quietly swapping your email and taking the account.

It does create a trap, though. If you've already lost access to the old inbox, the code goes somewhere you can't read. Approving from the app, where you're still signed in, is the easier path when it's offered.

This is the most common "it's broken" moment. You go to delete the old address, and there's no Remove link next to it.

LinkedIn only shows Remove for an address that isn't primary. You must first make another address primary, and LinkedIn says that only then will the Remove link appear.

So if the old email is still marked primary, the fix is step 7, not a bug report. Promote the new address, refresh, and Remove shows up.

Your new primary email must be verified first

LinkedIn won't let an unconfirmed address take over. Its help page says your primary email address can only be replaced with a verified email address.

In practice, that means Make primary does nothing useful until you've clicked through the confirmation email.

If you added the new address and it isn't offering Make primary, check your inbox for LinkedIn's message first. Confirming it is what unlocks the switch.

How to remove an old email address from LinkedIn

Removing is optional. Many people keep a second address on file as a backup way in.

When you do want it gone, LinkedIn's page on removing an email address covers it.

On desktop, go to Email addresses and click Remove next to the address. In the iOS or Android app, tap the X next to it.

LinkedIn may ask for your password or a code before it completes. That's the same protection as when you added the new one.

Can you sign in with more than one email on LinkedIn?

Yes. LinkedIn lets you sign in with your primary email or any additional address on your account.

That's why keeping two addresses is a sensible default. LinkedIn itself recommends at least one personal and one work address.

If one inbox disappears, a job change, a closed domain, an old provider, you can still get in with the other. It turns a potential lockout into a minor inconvenience.

Should your primary email be work or personal?

For most people, personal. Your LinkedIn profile follows you from job to job, and a work address doesn't.

When you leave a company, you usually lose that inbox the same day. If it was your primary email, every LinkedIn security code and notification now goes nowhere.

Make a personal address your primary, and keep the work one as a secondary if you want it. Change it before you hand in your laptop, not after.

Changing your LinkedIn email in your last week at a job

The most common reason people change their LinkedIn email is leaving an employer. It's also the moment it's easiest to get wrong, because the clock runs out with your work inbox.

How to change your email on LinkedIn and remove the old one

Do it while the work address still receives mail:

  • Add your personal address and confirm it from that inbox.
  • Make the personal address primary.
  • Remove the work address, or keep it until any company license on it ends.

Doing it in that window means any security code LinkedIn sends still lands somewhere you can read. A week later, the same change can mean relying on app approval and hoping it's offered.

A primary email is needed for invitations

Changing addresses isn't only about sign-in. LinkedIn says a primary email address is mandatory to send invitations.

So an account without a confirmed primary address can't send connection invitations. That's another reason to keep the promote-then-remove order: at no point does the account lack a primary.

It also means a half-finished change is worth finishing today. An unconfirmed new address and a removed old one is the combination that causes trouble.

The license toggle next to a new email

Some members see an extra toggle next to a newly confirmed address. It's for activating licenses, such as Sales Navigator, through that email.

LinkedIn notes the toggle won't reset your password. It's about which address a company license attaches to, not about your sign-in.

If your employer gave you a Sales Navigator seat tied to your work email, leave that address on the account while you still use the license.

When LinkedIn's confirmation email doesn't arrive

A missing confirmation email usually has an ordinary cause. Before assuming anything's wrong, check:

  • Your spam or promotions folder, where automated account emails often land.
  • The spelling of the address you typed in Email addresses.
  • Company filters, if it's a work address, which sometimes hold external messages.

If you spot a typo, add the correct address and confirm that one. Until you do, keep your old address as primary.

When you have a second LinkedIn account under another email

Sometimes the real reason for an email change is a second LinkedIn account, often an old one registered under another address. Then you're dealing with two profiles, not one email.

That's a different job from changing an address. The way to clean it up is covered in merging multiple LinkedIn accounts, which is worth reading before you delete anything.

Settle which account you're keeping first. Then move the email you want onto that one.

Common worries about changing your LinkedIn email

"Will I be locked out?" Not if you follow the order. The old address stays active until the new one is confirmed and primary.

"I can't reach my old inbox." Use the app approval if LinkedIn offers it, since you're already signed in there.

"Do I have to delete the old one?" No. A second address is a useful backup, and you can sign in with either.

The one rule that prevents every problem: confirm, then promote, then remove. Open Email addresses now and add the address you'll still have in five years.

Email change FAQ

Does changing my LinkedIn email change my password?

No. LinkedIn asks for your current password when you add the new address, and nothing in the process asks you to set a new one.

Can I have two email addresses on my LinkedIn account?

Yes. You can add more than one, sign in with any of them, and choose which is primary. LinkedIn recommends keeping a personal and a work address.

Why does LinkedIn want a code when I add an email?

It's a security check. LinkedIn may send a code to your current primary email or ask you to approve the change in the app before it accepts a new address.
