How to delete an Instagram photo, and how to undo it within 30 days

Deleting a photo feels final, and on most apps it is.

Instagram gives you a safety net, but it has a time limit, and a couple of alternatives might suit you better than deleting at all.

Short answer: to delete an Instagram photo, go to your profile, tap the post, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, select Delete and confirm. The catch: the photo isn't gone straight away. It moves to your Recently deleted folder for 30 days, and you can restore it during that time from Settings > Your activity > Recently deleted by selecting it and tapping Restore.

Below: deleting one photo or many, removing a single photo from a carousel, recovering a deleted post, and when archiving is the better choice.

How to delete a single Instagram photo

Instagram's page on deleting posts keeps it short:

  1. Go to your profile and open the photo you want to remove.
  2. Tap Options (the three dots) above the post.
  3. Tap Delete, then tap Delete again to confirm.

The photo disappears from your profile, from followers' feeds, and from anywhere it was showing on Instagram.

The same steps work for reels and videos you've posted.

The likes and comments on the post go with it. That matters if you're deleting a popular post to re-upload an edited version: the new post starts from zero.

How to delete several photos at once

Going post by post is slow if you're clearing out an old profile. Instagram has a bulk option in Your activity:

  1. Open the menu (three lines) on your profile.
  2. Tap Your activity, below "How you use Instagram."
  3. Tap Posts, below "Content you shared."
  4. Tap Select, then select each post you want to remove.
  5. Tap Delete at the bottom, then confirm.

Before selecting, you can sort posts from newest to oldest, or filter by date range with All dates. That makes it easy to target, say, everything from before a rebrand.

Bulk-deleted posts go to Recently deleted too, so a mistaken selection isn't permanent.

If the photo you want gone is one slide in a multi-photo post, you don't have to delete the whole thing. Instagram's page on carousels explains that after sharing, you can remove photos or videos from a carousel, reorder them and edit captions.

Open the post, tap the three-dot menu, tap Edit, and remove the slide you don't want. Tap Done to save.

There's a limit in the other direction: Instagram says you can't add new photos or videos to a carousel after it's shared. So removing works, but replacing requires reposting.

How to recover a deleted Instagram photo

This is the safety net. Instagram's page on recovering deleted content explains that content you delete is removed from your account immediately and moved to Recently deleted.

To restore it:

  1. Open the menu on your profile.
  2. Tap Your activity, then Recently deleted, below "Removed and archived content."
  3. Choose the type of content at the top: Posts, Reels and videos, or Stories.
  4. Tap the photo, tap Options, then tap Restore and Restore again.

The photo returns to your profile.

Instagram notes you need the latest version of the app to see Recently deleted, and it's available in the Android and iPhone apps.

Deleted isn't gone for 30 days. After that, it is.

How long deleted photos stay recoverable

Instagram's timing rules are specific:

  • Posts, reels and videos stay in Recently deleted for 30 days, then are deleted automatically.
  • Stories that aren't in your stories archive stay for up to 24 hours.
  • During that window, the content isn't accessible to other people on Instagram.

If you don't see a photo you expected in Recently deleted, it's likely older than 30 days, or it was a story past its 24 hours.

You can also empty the folder early. In Recently deleted, tap a photo, tap Options, then Delete, to remove it permanently without waiting.

What happens after the 30 days

Once content leaves Recently deleted, it's permanently deleted from your account. Instagram's page on what happens to deleted content adds some detail about the process behind the scenes.

It says the full deletion process can take up to 90 days after it begins, and that copies may remain in backup storage used to recover from disasters or software errors. Instagram may also keep information for things like legal issues or terms violations.

None of that is accessible to you or to other people on Instagram. From your side, a photo past its 30 days is gone.

Archive instead of delete

If you're not sure you want a photo gone forever, archiving is often the better choice. Instagram's page on archiving posts explains that an archived post is hidden from your profile, so followers and everyone else can't see it, but it keeps all its likes and comments.

To archive, open the post, tap Options and select Archive. You can bring it back to its original spot on your profile at any time.

The difference matters most for posts with history.

Delete a photo with 500 likes and a great comment thread, and it's gone after 30 days. Archive it, and everything's still there if you ever want it back.

Other ways to take a reel off your profile

For reels, deleting isn't the only way to tidy your profile. Instagram's page on managing reels lists the options in a reel's Manage menu: open the reel, tap Options, then Manage.

From there you can:

  • Edit the caption and location.
  • Turn off commenting or hide likes.
  • Add the reel to your profile's main grid, or pin it to the top of your Reels tab.
  • Archive the reel, which hides it without deleting it.

So if a reel simply doesn't fit the look of your grid anymore, archiving it keeps the views, likes and comments while taking it out of sight.

Deleting old highlights and stories

Photos also live in highlights, and those have their own clean-up tool. Instagram's page on editing or deleting a highlight explains that you can tap and hold a highlight on your profile and choose Delete Highlight, or open it and remove individual stories.

To clear many at once, open the menu on your profile, tap Your activity, tap Highlights under "Content you shared," tap Select, choose the highlights you want gone and tap Delete.

Stories deleted from your archive follow the same safety net as posts: they go to Recently deleted, where Instagram keeps archived stories for 30 days.

Photos you shared to Facebook too

If you shared the photo to Facebook when you posted it, deleting it on Instagram doesn't necessarily remove the Facebook copy. Instagram's deletion page links to separate Facebook instructions for deleting a photo, video or reel you shared there.

After deleting on Instagram, check your Facebook profile or Page and remove the copy there as well if you want it gone everywhere.

Things to check before you delete

A few quick questions save regret later:

  • Do you want the likes and comments? If yes, archive instead.
  • Are other people tagged? The post disappears from their tagged photos too.
  • Is it linked from somewhere else, such as a website or a message? Those links will stop working.
  • Is it one bad slide in a carousel? Remove the slide, not the post.

If you're deleting because of a typo in the caption or a wrong location, you don't need to delete at all. Instagram lets you edit a post's caption and location after sharing.

And if the problem is who can see the photo rather than the photo itself, a privacy change may be enough.

Switching to a private account limits your posts to approved followers, and Instagram notes that private posts don't appear in search results, Explore, or hashtag and location pages.

You don't have to get it right the first time

Instagram built Recently deleted precisely so a delete isn't a one-way door. If you're unsure, delete it and see how the profile feels; you have 30 days to change your mind.

And if you'd rather keep your options open indefinitely, archive. It takes the photo out of view with nothing lost.

Deleting photos: frequently asked questions

Do people get notified when I delete a photo?

Instagram's help pages don't describe any notification. The photo simply disappears from your profile and from their feeds.

Can I recover a photo I deleted more than 30 days ago?

No. Instagram says content in Recently deleted is deleted automatically after 30 days, and after that it can't be restored.

Can I recover deleted messages the same way?

No. Instagram's recovery page states that deleted messages on Instagram cannot be restored. Recently deleted covers posts, reels, videos and stories only.
